Been learning for bout 5 months now, one of my best mates Mandi has been teaching me she is also probly one of your biggest fans, I’m now playing in Clubx in Cardiff and love it, but what has always been the best crowd pleasing most uplifting track u enjoy to play?

I find ‘right here, right now’ does the trick for me but that’s probably because it’s one of my own! anytime you drop the bassline of robin s ‘show me love’ most crowds throughout the world tend to get a little euphoric for some reason (don’t play the whole tune though, it’s the bassline that does it!

    Good Afternoon Mr Cook

Big fan of your work, was at the first beach party……

Quick Question what is the Donna Summer Song you dropped at tomorrow land and Big Beach Boutique 5. Also (I know two questions) when is your next studio album been gone too long?

it was ‘I feel love’ the record which invented acid house way back in 1977 (and got me interested in electronic music) I played a bit of it at BBB5 as a tribute to donna summer who had died that week but if you liked it I suggest you track down the original patrick cowley 12” mix in full

me and the mrs went to see you at sankeys. which meant a 2 hour train journey and staying over in a hotel. we got in sankeys at 11pm and for the next 2 hours we listened to deep and tech house. so at 1am when we found out you wouldnt be playing till 3am we left as we couldnt take what we were listening to any more. now im not going to be ignorant and say the music was terrible, like a lot of people do. it just wasnt to our liking. but surely as you were playing. sankeys should of got the other djs on the night to cater to the same style of music as what you would play. im pretty sure if people where going to see loco dice or swen vath play the club wouldnt get away with some electro dj or dubstep dj being on before hand. what do you think????

Hmmmn, Interesting one that. sorry you couldn’t stay up late enough to see me, someone should have told you I wasn’t on til 3am then you could have got a disco nap at the hotel and come out later. obviously I’m not in control of who plays before me so I’m sorry they were not to your taste. you’d have to moan at sankeys about that! I could apologise and offer you tickets to another show to make up for it but I still wouldn’t be able to promise what style of music you’d have to sit through first or whether I’d go on before your bedtime. such is the nature of nightclubs, I’m afraid…

Hey man, your stuff has been HUGELY influential to me, I tend to do more dubstep and dnb, but was looking to do a tune and maybe include some sampling, still keep my own sound, and write some original parts too (which I believe you do as well?) but have no idea how to start with sampling, as in finding the right samples, and wondered if you had any advice? My music is here if you’re interested: http://www.soundcloud.com/systemdance, thanks though man, your music has been influential to my music making throughout my life!

The great thing about sampling is there are no rules, elliot. Trawl through your record collection, trawl through your mum’s record colletion, trawl through the internet….if it sounds good then put it in. to be honest, listening to your stuff you seem to have your shit down pat doing dubstep and d&b. Why change if you’re having fun?

    Hey Norman,
Thx for the years of inspiration. Got to see the cinema broadcast of BBB5 and have been eagerly waiting for the release. However (and pls correct if wrong or if i’m going blind) but I couldn’t find Australia on the available list. Is this temporary and if no then is there another way of getting it? I really loved it and would love to have a copy on my shelf.
Additionally, out of curiosity, I’ve been a mobile DJ for a while, and feel track selection is more key than tricks (both is obviously better). I’ve noticed that there are a lot of DJ’s now flooding the scene showcasing their skills on a laptop, but fail to catch a crowds attention with the music they play. I know music is in the ear of the beholder, but what is your take on this?
    Thx again,
    Cheers,
    Jason

You are totally right on both counts, amigo. For some inexplicable reason the dvd came out later in Australia, Its out now here – http://bit.ly/XNSh8J
As for the priorities of a dj, I totally agree, playing the right tune at the right time is way more important than showing off your skills and trickery. It’s actually a lot harder craft to learn than pressing buttons on a laptop too!

Hi.. I am in the fellowship and am doing well..i have my daughter back in my life and she is 13 years old on 30/11/2012. I was wondering if i get Chapel Royal church hall in Brighton (i am keyholder for meetings and will ask Vicar) for a couple of hours would you come and DJ for an hour? I realise its a big ask but Megan ,my daughter has had a hard time at school recently with bully’s and i would like her to feel special and give her a party for about 20 school friends (i am on my own with her and do not have money but am so grateful to fellowship for my sobriety.. each day is a bonus) I just thought i would ask ..if i dont try i will never know. Many Thanks for reading. Warm Regards Claire

I would love to help, claire but I don’t think it’d work as an idea. The last time I played to that age group I pretty much bombed out coz I don’t really play tunes that strike a chord with that age group. Trying to get an atmosphere with twenty thirteen year olds in a church hall would be impossible. All I can do is send my love and strength to you and yours. Maybe one day I’ll see you at a meeting?

Hi, we came to sankys on fri. It was amazing by the way. We stayed till the lights came on, always the sign of a very good night. I was really looking forward to praise you but you dint play it and when we’ve been to see you before you normally do. Do you think you’ll play it at warehouse project. I hope to be coming there funds permitting hehe x

Yes you would have thought that playing a 3 hour set I would have gotten round to playing ‘praise you’ wouldn’t you? Whoops! Sorry about that. I can’t actually remember the last half hour of my set. I just know it got quite intense which is probably why I ran out of time. I’ll try and play it at the whorehouse project……

    Hello Norman!
I’m just recovering from seeing you at Sankeys last night, at which you were superb (as ever). At some point you played a remix of Talking Heads’ Psycho Killer, which I’ve since tried my best to find, but to no avail. Is there any chance you could let me know what it was/who it was by please?!

p.s. Thanks for an awesome night!

    Hi Norman.
After your amazing show @Tomorrowland 2012 I can not forget one track. In it there were the vocals of “Word hard, play hard” I guess. Since I listened to it I was looking all around the internet, but always with a negative result.

Is that just an edit or is it possible to buy it anywhere? I would love to play it in one of my sets.

    Greets, Marco

    Hi.
I love your music you are the best!
you are the reason i became interested in music, my brother had Norman Cook collection CD and Pierre Henry – Psyche Rock (Fatboy Slim Malpase Mix) was the song that was so good I could not believe its true, still is
as most of your tracks/mixes (my fav to this day is: Praise You)
Second: Im a home music producer
I would be honored if you would listen to my track

    peace!

Hi Norm, saw you live at Tomorrowland 2012, and Gay Pride 2012 in brighton. Incredible performer, highlight had to be the ‘bounce’ edit going into BITCH at tomorrowland, genius. Just wondering what hardware and software you use to mix live, and what software you use to make your edits in advance? I’m 18, and currently using logic for production and traktor for mixing, but am I missing out on better programmes? cheers

    • fatboyslim
      Posted 18 November, 2012 at 10:26 pm | Permalink

It’s all a bit of both, my friend. I use ableton to make edits, mashups and little drops like the ‘bounce’ one in advance but when I dj I use serato so I’m actually mixing live. It seems we have opted for the rivals, serato vs tractor….ableton vs logic. May the best set up win!
