Norm, I’ve been a fan for years, used to be a regular at the original concord and stand 3 feet in front you, playing your banging sets and smashing the metal barriers on the floor at the front whilst you whipped us into a bassline filled euphoria. Was even there on the last night when we smashed the place to pieces. Followed you to the Beach when the boutique moved although the atmosphere was never the same as being rammed into the Concord. And was there, freezing my ass off for the new years party on the beach a few years back. Just got myself 4 tickets for the rave at the amex stadium which I am well looking forward to and i have a question, a question ive always asked but never had a positve response to………How do I get backstage? or more importantly, how do I get to meet you in the flesh? Just to shake your hand and to say thank you, for all the years of banging nites out I had when living in brighton? If its a question you cant answer I understand (stalkers and all that) and I’ll be in the crowd anyway at the amex paying homage at the feet of the master of big beat. Keep on keeping on and do what you do best, phat basslines, awesome breaks and tunes that make crowds go wild. Peace. (ps, ‘Walk without rhythm, so you dont attract the worm’ is a quote from David Lynch’s movie Dune, great movie, great line, great sample from the Mary Jane master, great tune).

Ben. Obviously there is no way I can invite everyone backstage to meet me (especially at the amex gigs which are gonna be fairly mental backstage) if you live in brighton, you are bound to bump into me at some point. Do feel free to come up and say hello.
By the way. Thanks for the ‘dune’ tip off. I always wondered what bootsy was on about!

Haha – just wanted to ask if we can rock a set at your Big Beach Bootique next year and if you’ll do a remix for us for one of artist’s forthcoming vinyl release :)

Well, we know you’re swamped but we had to ask…!

I am digging that breakbeat/big beat sound. I think the line up at bbb5 is full up though, sadly.

    dear Norman
I bought FBS’s ‘the Greatest Hits’ pretty cheap and new from Amazon, published by Skint Records PO Box 174 Brighton, and was struck by what I could call ‘Transistor Radio Mix Down’ of many of the tracks. They seemed to miss all the lovely layering and depth I was hoping for. Were the original sounds thus, or was that introduced later in production and not representative of the orignal? Or is that part of the art?
    Respectfully yours,
    Phil Robinson, London

I don’t know of any remastering of the tunes for the greatest hits. I wouldn’t approve of anything like that. Did you buy a cd or an mp3 because mp3’s are digitally compressed which does lose some of the depth?

I would like to ask why when we live in worthing and saw you at the amex stadium on monday 24th oct that we are not allowed to get your tickets untill the 28th of oct. we are season ticket holders. We feel that if we do not get a chanace to get tickets for your gig untill the 28th we may not be able to get a ticket.

    Many thanks

Season ticket holders could buy tickets from the 24th onwards direct from the Club. They got first dibs. It’s not sold out yet so you will get a ticket. See you there. Did you get a flag?

I have been obsessed with your music for about 14 years now. When you come to Adelaide in March 2012, please feel free to come around to my house and hang out. I’ll show you everythign Adelaide has to offer….which isn’t much but I’ll make sure you have a great time while your here. Would love to meet you and can’t wait to see you rock out at Future Music Festival – the only reason I’d go to that fest is to see you. Whoo! Can’t wait!

It’s no problem writing the music using headphones but I wouldn’t do the mixdown on them. You have to have speakers to know how the air will move especially on the lower frequencies

Hello Norm, Your remix of STRETCH&VERN – get up! go insane is one of my favourite remixes of the big beat scene. Still today I really love it.

Question’s on STRETCH&VERN – get up! go insane

    1. What were you thinking at the time of writing as the breakdown is amazing!

    2. I have seen crowds go crazy over it, did you play it out often and to what affect?

    3. Stupid question but do you like it, or just see it as another remix?

    Question on mixing.

Technics seem to be dead for all dj’s long live the pioneer cdj. I get that it makes sense as means you can play your own bootlegs, remixes easily.

    1. Do you miss decks?

    2. Do you use traktor or anything like it with cdj as i noticed you had a laptop when you play out?

p.s your remix of renegade master was amazing too! 1st time I heard it i was blown away! I miss the bigbeat days.

      Hi neil
1.i was just trying to freak people out and do something different with the tune coz stretch and vern had already covered the jump around angle. This was the heady days of the boutique and the heavenly social and I was trying to make tunes to play there. No rules, just big beats!
2.to be honest I haven’t listened to it for years. It sounds a bit big beat by numbers! I do have a lot more fondness for my remix of ‘I’m alive’ that one was truly stooopid!
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vz0bSi_sDHw
      3.see question 2…

1.i was lost without them first, I didn’t know where I was in a tune without being able to see where the needle was on the record! Also if they misbehaved I always knew what was wrong. When cdj’s act up they don’t tell you what is wrong they just stop working…
3.i use serato which has the audio and video played via the cdj’s

Norm, the master of making it happen, genres of music, the irrelevant age of the tune when its treated (lets say cooked) with the love and respect you impart with profound abilty, knowledge, unrivalled experience and an instinct so true. My love Karen, best bud John and me will be at The Empress gig. As a child of disco in the 70’s ‘yes sir i can boogie’ so stirred me I felt I understood life (fool),if you were able to create a little marriage between this and ‘ i found a place where we can boogie’ could you, would you, should you
