As for northern stuff I dig the showstoppers ‘aint nothing but a houseparty’ or don thomas ‘come on train’

Norman i had a 3cd collection it was your good self, tall paul and someone else. On your cd your first tune started of like old sixties music then it was like a saw cutting wood then bang straight into the beat, can you tell me what this tune was called? its going back a good 10 years sorry i cant explain it any better.
    Cheers

David. I think it was walter wanderley’s version of ‘summer samba’ (as sung by homer simpson) the sawing noise is from a track on armand van helden’s 2 future 4 u album…nice trainspot!

I love the bandname “Brighton Port Authority” and the image above….. I’m working at Shoreham Port where we’re really trying to raise the profile this year (marathon, open day, masterplan, major projects etc). How about a signature tune snippet for the website?!
    Keep up the great work.

That is ironic, brian, because we were originally gonna call ourselves ‘shoreham port authority’ but we weren’t sure if that was legal or not. Also americans couldn’t pronounce shore-ham!
Feel free to use any BPA music on your website. You let us use the port for all our photos

Hey Norm, long time fan, was just wondering, in Spike’s ‘Praise You’ video, when the fat guy came out and switched the stereo off, why did Spike jump on to him?? It’s been on my mind since the video was released!

    Thanks

    Ben :)

Ben. It was the manager of the theatre that was telling us to switch the music off and go away. I’ve no idea why spike jumped into his arms (it’s an old harpo marx gag) I thought he was gonna get us arrested. I think he was trying to break the ice…

    Hi Norman,

i read in the Pacha magazin this month that you was never been asked to play on a beachclub in Ibiza. My friend an i are hosting the Malibu Beach Club @ Salinas, one of the oldest classic beach clubs on the island.

I would ask you gladly officially as the first: YOU WANNA PLAY?? ;-)
it would be a big honour for us

On your Millenium Mix CD (with Pete Tong and someone else!) you included the track Return of the Original Art Form by Major Force. Which remix was it? It’s got to be one of the biggest tracks of all time.

Hope this finds you in fine fettle.

Jeez, william, it was late. I seem to remember ‘elevator’ by junior sanchez. ‘yeke yeke’ by mori kante and ‘violet’ by stonewash but I was 3 1/2 hours in by then. If you could describe it in some way…….

    Hello Norm;
I’m the Marketing guy at Gemini in the U.S. We all love your work here! I was looking you up online and was enthralled to a photo of you on Wikipedia with an old Gemini mixer. Was this a prop, or did you actually use Gemini stuff at any point? Naturally, the idea of someone of your stature and ability as a ‘Gemini Endorsee’ (or at least consent for the use of that photo in our promo materials) would be mouth-watering! Please contact me. Thanks, and keep up the incendiary work!

Ed, in the old days I would use whatever mixer I was given. These days because I use serato to run all the wav’s and visuals I use rane mixers because they interface perfectly with serato. I don’t endorse anyone I’m afraid

    Hey Norman,
So many people love watching you DJ in the UK, why don’t you do more dj gigs? like a UK arena Tour of the AMG venues or something like that? As a promoter myself I would love to work with you but you hardly ever play out :/

    • fatboyslim
      Posted 12 September, 2010 at 9:27 pm | Permalink

I don’t really think the AMG/carling circuit is nice enough venues to make it a party rather than just another gig. It’s quite hard for DJ’s to get a good atmosphere going in rock venues but if you have some crazy ideas get in touch with my agent, david levy @ william morris agency

I know you like doing free gigs on your local beach, but have you considered southend? I think its not so big as brighton – but the pier is the biggest in the world. I am sure we would all give you a big welcome. I dont know why this hasnt happend before

    • fatboyslim

It’s probably not happened before because they’re not allowed to do it. There are many health and safety issues with playing on beaches but if southend want me I will gladly come!

    Hi Norm,

Just a couple of questions for you, and a wee story for you if you don’t mind. How did your long standing partnership with Simon come about ?. Also was it hard to persuade him to sing ‘Superman’ on ITWGNABB ?.

I always have yourself or Tom Gandey (he’s a friend btw) blasting away in the car most days. But one of my brothers passed away last week. So on the journeys back and forth to Fife, to help with his family and sort out this Saturdays funeral etc. It has been particularly upliftng listening to you both. Managing to raise my spirits, and make this difficult time easier to deal with. So I’d like to thank you for that.

We’ve met a few times over the last few years (Don’t worry, your not expected to know or remember me, lol). I’m sure we’ll met again at some point. So don’t be suprised if a big Scottish guy comes up, and gives you a huge hug, with out warning, lol. I’ll give Tom his hug next week when I see him.

    Peace.

Thanks marty, sorry to hear about your brother. Music can be a great help at times like these.
Simon thornton was the in house engineer at the studio I used to use back in 1988 when I started producing and I thought he was the bees knees (he still is) he becoame my engineer of choice and so when I stared making tunes in my own studio at home he has done everything since then, engineering, building and maintaining the studio, mixing all my tunes, mastering, pro-tools and attempting to teach me how computers work (an ongoing process!) he is quite shy so it took 20 years before I could persuade him to sing on one of my records!
It’s quite weird to think he was a 17 year old lad when I started working with him and now he just turned 40!
I saw thomas in ibiza last week, he is looking hot.
Be sure and say hello next time we meet

Thanks for the response Norm. I’ll certainly say hi next time we meet. Obviously for all us FBS geeks out here, Simon is a bit of a legend. So it’s nice to get the background on your partnership. Yeah, Tom is looking and sounding on fire.

    Hi Norm,

I’ve always been curious HOW you can make such interested drums in your songs. I am trying to be musician too ;-) to tell the truth something like you :-) IT took me a long time to make my drums – beat to sound approximately like yours. How do you build-make your drums? Mixing, EQing, Compresing, can you give me some tips? :-) dont worry, i will not be your competitor :-)

    Thx

    • fatboyslim
      Posted 12 September, 2010 at 9:23 pm | Permalink

Very briefly it is all of the above. I sample a drum loop off a record. Chop it up into kick drum, snare, hi hat etc, reply whatever drum pattern the eq and compress it heavily. The neat trick is to use more than one drum kit at the same time so you get the sound of 2 drummers. That really thickens it up! Have fun….
