    Hey Norm,
Saw you at Glastonbury and RockNess, both outstanding sets. RockNess was better in my opinion as it was outdoors and the Scottish crowd is hard to beat. What did you think of the set and being back at RockNess again?

Will be travelling down to London for the SW4 gig, any idea where the secret gig will be that you hinted at in the video? ;)

    Cheers,

    Michael

Michael, hope you enjoyed sw4. I enjoyed both, glasto had a more intense, clubby feel. Rockness was kick-ass festival vibes. sw4 just had the best sunset of the summer!
I never made it to the after party sadly. I was knackered after playing 2 shows in ibiza on Friday night and had to get my wife and son back to brighton…

I use serato scratch live. It’s great and you can use either turntables or cdj’s. It costs about £400 but is all you’ll ever need. There is no school for dj’s, just the university of life!

    Hi,
Do you drive an Astin Martin? We were on our way back to London from Poole the other day and spotted a gorgeous one on the Motorway. I rubber necked to see who was driving it and the guy looked just like you. Have been wondering ever since.
Please could you let me know!
    Thanks

Hi best DJ and producer ever!

Ive loved your music since I heard Rockafeller Skank, and I dont know anyone who like your music as much as me. You were the reason for me to go to my first festival: Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Since then I’ve been there six times, and met my lovely girlfriend. Without you, I would never had met her, so big thanks for that!!

Another fun thing, your manager threw your towel out in the 40 000 people crowd and my friend grabbed it :) Tell me if you need it, he still have it. I know, sounds sick, but blame yourself for being the best producer ever!

I love how you worked with samples on the albums “You’ve come a long long way baby” and “Halfway between the gutter and the stars” and even the difference between every song. How do/did you work with the rights for all the samples? Whats your recommendations if I’m building music by samples?

    Greetings from Stockholm

      Posted 4 September, 2010 at 6:07 pm | Permalink

Joel, you can keep the towel. It probably needs a good wash by now. Messing about with samples is fun at home and you can do what you want. It is only if you release the results commercially that you have to worry and it then requires time, patience and lawyers (hence money!). My advice is when you get to the stage of releasing your tunes, let the record company worry about the lawyers and copyright issues. Meantime have fun with your sampler!

    Hey Norm ,
Huge fan saw you at oxegen just wondering after your into (phycadellic sisters etc ) what is the second song sounds like a sample from Jay Z – H to the Izzo ”This is the anthem get your damn hands up”

    • fatboyslim
      Posted 4 September, 2010 at 6:06 pm | Permalink

The tune is ‘hip house anthem’ by rico tibbs. I just checked the jay z tune and it sounds a lot like the sample but I don’t think it is the same vocal. Nice spotting though! You’ll have to ask rico what the real sample is!

    Dear Norman

At Rockness this year I wondered did you receive a request to dedicate “Right Here, Right Now” to a young man called Ian Buchanan who had just died in a tragic car accident in Aberdeen-shire on 5th June. He was only 2 days before his 23rd birthday and was excited about his birthday and also going to Rockness as he always did with all his Alford school friends.

I’m his mum June Ross and from Inverness so also have been to Rockness and saw you for the first time 2 years ago which was on the 7th June 2008 – Ian’s 21st birthday and I just loved it and your music that night – it was brilliant!

At Rockness this year I saw you, as I was front of stage as I was 2 years ago, and saw you lift something above your head, it looked like a vinyl but also looked like a halo in the light. I just wondered was that your dedication to my son.

Also can you please ask Zoe does she remember me as the Scottish lady that she and her brother chatted to on their way to the Seychelles and back, but especially when we were stranded and Zoe wanted to return to London!

I hope she, you and the family are well and you enjoy your children – life is way too short and your children’s growing up is a very precious time – please enjoy.

    Kind Regards
    June

      Thanks june,
Sorry I didn’t get the message about your son. I would have gladly played the tune for him. Perhaps he was listening that day and provided the halo because it definitely wasn’t mine! If/when I return to rockness I will be thinking of him.
Yes zoe does remember you going to the seychelles, thanks for looking after her, we were both in a bit of a pickle in our lives at that point.
We are all well, thank you. Little nelly is 8 months old and delicious, woody is 9 and a bundle of happy nonsense. We love them and will cherish them every day. Life is too short indeed. Our love to you and our thoughts to ian.
      X norm and zoe

        Dear Norm and Zoe
Thanks for your reply, only just advised there was one here!
With the confirmation that you didn’t get the request for Ian then I have no doubt that he indeed was listening, watching and “playing tricks” at Rockness as he was famed for!
I hope to see your return there in the near future and priviliged that you are added to the many that will visit Rockness and have thoughts of Ian – a special young man that still had so much to do and see, yet proud what all he did achieve in his too short life.
A music lover brought up with everything from ceilidh/pipe band music to U2, Phil Collins to Techno, his later years proved a knowledge of DJ’s and variety of music that I’m only touching the surface now in learning about! His only sister Carina (21) and other close friends chose the 3 very apt tracks for his funeral from his massive, diverse playlist. Aha – Take on Me, Cinematic Orchestra – Build a Home and Simple Minds – Don’t You Forget About Me! All very special songs now, even if they weren’t before (as I and many others hadn’t heard Build a Home – and what a tune!), as is Right Here, Right Now and “Ian’s Halo” at Rockness 2010 (see YouTube)!
Glad Zoe you remember me – life is indeed a roller coaster we all ride! Delighted to hear you’re all well and ensuring cherished times with Nelly and Woody who sound great. I have Ross (14) and Kyle (12) home now for holidays, Ian’s younger brothers who are carrying on his love of music and keeping mum updated!
With love and appreciation of your kind reply, its brought tears and comfort.
        Junex
p.s. please let me know when north of the border!

Another question is that i saw you in an interview last year i think that you was talking about bringing out a new album which had a lot your friends on it such as Dizzee. I love beat; rythm; drums and bass; I love the music with the World Cup in 200 seconds clip. Hopefully I can catch up on the music I missed years ago! it’s been used at the end of “there’s only one Jimmy Grimble” in the final football match in the film. That scene makes the film, one of my favourites. And it’s still used at the city of manchester stadium when the players run out before the match and makes the atmosphere in that stadium immense.
